Fun with Telescopic Antennas in the Garden

Updated: Jul 16, 2025

Today, I had a blast in the garden using two 5.6m telescopic stainless antennas. They were held together by a red M10 PL259 adapter, creating a fantastic and effective dipole.

Setting Up the Dipole Antenna

For this setup, you'll need a good 12 meters of space. I used a lighting rig tripod to support the dipole. The rig is sturdy and allows for excellent positioning. I connected 10 meters of coax directly to my Yaesu FT818. This setup required no tuner and no balun, yet I achieved perfect SWR on 20m.

I was amazed that I didn't even need to adjust the length of the antenna—just fully extended it. The results were truly astonishing! For instance, my WSPR 2W signal reached Australia (VK6PVL) and the British Virgin Islands (KP2RUM).

Advantages of Telescopic Antennas

Telescopic antennas offer numerous benefits. They are lightweight and portable, making them ideal for both stationary and mobile operations. Their ability to extend and retract allows for easy setup and storage.

Additionally, they are versatile. The antenna can also be used as a vertical using a ground stake and one telescopic whip. This flexibility makes it a favorite among radio enthusiasts, as it can adapt to different situations and needs.

Tips for Optimal Performance

To ensure you're getting the best performance from your telescopic antennas, consider the following tips:

  1. Proper Grounding: Make sure your antenna is well-grounded. This step minimizes interference and enhances performance.

  2. Clear Installation Area: Choose a location free from obstructions. Trees, buildings, and other structures can affect your signal propagation.

  3. Experiment with Orientation: Depending on your target, try different orientations for your dipole. Horizontal polarization may work better for some distances, while vertical may serve better at others.

  4. Check SWR Regularly: Keeping an eye on your SWR (Standing Wave Ratio) ensures that your system is running efficiently. A perfect SWR indicates that your signal is being transmitted effectively.

Closing Thoughts

In conclusion, using telescopic antennas in the garden was an exhilarating experience. The ease of setup and impressive results make it a worthwhile endeavor for any radio amateur. If you haven't tried it, I highly recommend experimenting with this setup.

With a little practice, you too can achieve fantastic results, just as I did. Whether you're aiming to connect with distant stations or simply enjoy the hobby, telescopic antennas offer an enjoyable and effective way to enhance your radio experience.

Make sure to explore and find out how many new connections you can make from your own garden! You'll be amazed at the distances you can reach with the right setup.
